Today the Weekly Dig, a free weekly Boston newspaper, published a profile about me. Of course, I was flattered and eager to read it — more so for the links the online version would send to this site than the print version. Little did I know just how much I would come to dislike the print version.
As you can see from the photo, they managed to spell my name wrong in the headline! If you read the rest of the article, they spell it correctly, until you reach the final paragraph, where they spell it wrong again! (My actual last name is Kender.)
I’ve spoken with the article’s author, and she assures me that her original copy was correct. I believe her, too. Making a weekly newspaper is about as pretty as making sausage, especially an ever-slendering paper like the Dig. Budgets are tight and not every word gets looked at by a proofreader. But it’s a profile piece, and they didn’t manage to get the subject’s name right. It’s yet another reminder of the weaknesses of print compared to an online medium.
Sure, this is a bit of a tantrum on my part, but hell.. it’s my name and I’m ranting on my own website, so that’s my right. But this should also serve as a warning to any self-pubishers out there: beware the press. They mean well, but, well… refer to picture above.
In other news, they profiled me in the Weekly Dig! The article turned out to be pretty well written and much longer than I anticipated. Read the online version, sans errors, here.
